Use and Care Tips for Your Driveway

Keep your driveway and parking lot in good condition with proper maintenance techniques. The professionals at Stern Nester Inc Paving can suggest useful care tips that can help protect your driveway against potential damage.

Our job doesn't just end at providing you with quality workmanship; we believe in going the extra mile to help you get a product that is worth your money.

Useful Suggestions to Make Your Driveway Last Long

1. Liquid asphalt in the blacktop needs time to cure. It may take 18 to 24 months for the asphalt to fully harden. Extra precautions need to be taken, especially during the hot summer months.

2. Don't drive on your new paving for 3 full days or longer, if recommended by Stern Nester Inc.

3. We make every effort to avoid puddles in your driveway. However, some small ones are possible depending on the natural contour of your land.

4. Your new paving can be marked by cars moving too fast when entering, exiting, or turning around in a tight area.

5. Don't turn your wheels in place. This causes power steering marks (a circle of disturbed asphalt). Try not to park in the same spot every day. The hotter the day, the more vulnerable the asphalt is to marking.

6. We recommend backfilling the driveway around the edges. The edges are the weakest part of the paving and you should avoid driving on them because they may crack over time. Filling the edges with topsoil will provide support.

7. Asphalt is made of stones of various sizes, sand, and liquid asphalt with other additives. It will have different textures in different areas of the paving and appear smoother in some areas than others. The texture may also appear different where the asphalt was spread by hand or spread by machine.

8. Grading the area prior to paving usually will remove any weeds and their roots. If a weed does come through, spray it with weed killer. Contact us if it damages the asphalt.

9. Place plywood under things that may damage your driveway such as jacks, car ramps, motorcycle and bicycle kick stands, and lawn chairs.

10. Keep heavy trucks off your driveway as much as possible. Make delivery trucks aware of the new asphalt. If storing boats or trailers for long periods of time, use plywood under the jacks and tires to avoid depressions.

11. Avoid getting gas, antifreeze, oil, or other types of fluid on asphalt paving at any time. It will eat into the asphalt and cause damage.

12. We recommend using calcium instead of salt on your driveway if you would get an icy area.

13. Asphalt should be sealed using a water-based coal tar blend sealer. You should wait a minimum of 6 months to seal (we recommend sealing after 2 summers) and then seal every 3 to 5 years depending on the volume of traffic.
